So! The Brighton trip (February) was great. We spoke with a UK immigration attorney and, long-story-short, there are no special programs to help us immigrate there. Such programs did exist, in the past tense, fairly recently. But the UK government is probing the boundaries of right-wing ideology, and they've scaled back the opportunities for skilled foreign workers. Oh well.
In March, we visited the Dutch city of 's-Gravenhage, nicknamed Den Haag, aka "The Hague" if you're speaking English and prosecuting war criminals.
Long-story-short, last week we moved away from the Amsterdam suburbs, and we're residents of Den Haag now. I like this city much better! Our apartment is quiet, and paradoxically around the corner there's a street with heavy foot traffic, shops and restaurants. We share a wall with a coffee roaster, and sometimes the smell of roasting coffee fills the house, it's so good you guys
There's a nearby beach district with a tricky name, Scheveningen. Two native Dutchies have told me this word was used by Dutch soldiers as a pronunciation test in World War II, to expose German imposters. Wikipedia says this claim is "anecdotal". Argh I'm getting sucked into an article about shibboleths now.
I'm working again (contract, remote, part-time-ish). This is a "soft launch", a gentle reentry to the mind-flaying reality of modern software development. I'm still recuperating from the effects of long-term burnout. A few nights ago I felt like walking to get ice cream, and it's rare that I feel like doing anything these days. I won't unpack this here in my public online journal, just know that the situation is slowly improving. ...
... The ice cream place sells key lime pie flavor (with pieces of pie crust mixed in), and also melon sorbet. Both are incredible. The Hague hosts a number of foreign embassies, so the restaurants cater to foreign tastes, which means the food actually has flavor.
The other big news: we have acquired a puppy, named Yoshi. (Instagram video.) This was a questionable life choice, at our age, right before a big move, with limited income, in the most expensive country in the world, would you agree?? ... So far we've all managed to not kill each other.
